Anubias afzelii
Anubias afzelii is one of the easiest Anubias species. They are visually very attractive. It has tough, thick elliptical leaves that can grow up to 15 cm long. The leaves are different shades of green but less dark in color than those of other species. It makes no special demands on light, although in very bright light its leaves become very light in color and it also becomes more sensitive to algae.
It is a slow grower, it only forms a few leaves per year. It grows to 40 to 50 cm high. Like other Anubias species, Anubias afzelii makes few demands on nutrition. The addition of Co2 is not necessary. The plant can survive in fresh water under almost all conditions.
This species, unlike the other species, can be placed in somewhat coarser gravel. Don’t place it in sand, then the plant will die within a few weeks. It can also be beautifully tied to stone or wood.
Anubias afzelii propagation
Propagating the plant can be done very simply by cutting its rhizome. Make sure that there are at least 5 healthy leaves on each part.
Due to its tough leaves, the plant is well suited for use in aquariums with cichlids.
