Aulonocara eureka
The males grow to about 13 centimeters and the females about 8 centimeters. This Aulonocara species is a cultivated form (selective breeding). They are probably bred from the Aulonocara jacobfreibergi and therefore also belong to the rock inhabiting Aulonocara. The stone formations provide many caves and shelters for the Aulonocara to reside in. The sand allows these fish to dig.
Gender dimorphism
Males: bigger and very colorful
Females: small, brown, and sometimes with orange anal and dorsal fins.
Diet
Catches invertebrates and other small animals in the sand.
Distribution
Transition area from sand to rock.
The Aquarium
The aquarium should be equipped with a large number of rock structures and sand should be used on the bottom. This Aulonocara is a very lively swimmer and must therefore be given sufficient swimming space.
Behavior
During the mating season, this Aulonocara is very nervous and swims feverishly through the aquarium. They chase away any fish that come too close to their “nest”. Aulonocara can be kept very well in a mixed aquarium as long as they are not overly aggressive. Keeping a number of different Aulonocara species in the same aquarium should be avoided, otherwise, they will cross-breed.
Aulonocara eureka is similar to other Aulonocara species, generally a bit more aggressive in its behavior…
