Gastromyzon aeroides was described in 2006 by Tan & Sulaiman. The genus name Gastromyzon can be divided into two parts. From the ancient Greek “gaster” which means “belly”. The second part Myzo means to suck or suckle. The species name aeroides comes from Latin and means “sky blue”, a reference to the blue in the back, anal and caudal fin.
