Poptella paraguayensis – Discus Tetra
Poptella paraguayensis was first officially described in 1907 by Eigenmann. The genus Poptella has only four species. They are part of the family Characidae and belong to the subfamily Stethaprioninae. Their common name is Discus Tetra.
Description
The color of Poptella paraguayensis is not very noticeable. The scales are silvery in color. If the scales do not reflect light, they can have a greenish sheen. On the flank, a dark stripe runs over two-thirds of the flank and tail. This stripe is sometimes dark but can also reflect light.
Despite the lack of striking colors, it is still a fish that combines well with other species. Their deviating round shape and friendly character make them extremely suitable for this.
Biotope
Poptella paraguayensis is native to the Rio Paraguay basin and the lower Rio Paraná in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
Diet
In the wild, the Discus Tetra’s diet consists of plant material, fish, invertebrates and zooplankton, so it is omnivorous. In the aquarium it is therefore best to provide them with a varied diet of frozen or live food, flakes, granules and, for example, spirulina.
