Banjo Catfish

Banjo Catfish are the members of the family Aspredinidae. They are called Banjo Catfish because the shape of some members of this family is very reminiscent of a Banjo. The body is flat with a round head. Behind it follows a long thin back body, just the shape of a Banjo.

This family includes three subfamilies, 13 genera and about 43 species.

Origin

Banjo Catfish originate from South America. They inhabit most of the major rivers east of the Andes such as the Amazon, Rio Paraguay and Rio Uruguay. Only the genus Bunocephalus occurs west of the Andes.
