Callichthyidae

The family Callichthyidae are a family of scaleless fishes. The family has eight genera and about 177 species. Most species within this family fall within the genus Corydoras.

The name Callichthyidae can be broken down into two ancient Greek words. Kallis means beautiful and ichthys means fish.

Particular

Instead of scales, their body is protected by large bony plates under the mucous membrane (like an armor). To this they owe their Dutch name Armored Catfish.
