Osteogaster

The genus Osteogaster was first described by Cope in 1894. The genus name Osteogaster can be broken down into two Greek words: ostéon (Gr. ὀστέον), bone; gastḗr (Gr. γαστήρ), belly, referring to the coracoid bones of O. eques, which, unlike those of Gastrodermus elegans, enclose the belly region.

After some time, the genus became a synonym of Corydoras. For a long time, the species within this genus belonged to the Corydoras. In 2024, the genus Osteogaster was reinstated (see Het einde van Corydoras als wij die!).

The species within this genus:

  • Osteogaster aeneus
  • Osteogaster eques
  • Osteogaster hephaestus
  • Osteogaster maclurei
  • Osteogaster melanotaenia
  • Osteogaster rabauti
  • Osteogaster zygata
