Aphyocharax
The genus Aphyocharax is part of the family Characidae or the Characids. The genus was described by Günther in 1868. The genus name Aphycharax can be broken down into two Greek words. ‘Aphyo’ means ‘small fry’ and is a reference to Aphyocharax pusillus, one of the smaller species. ‘Charax’ is the pointed stake of a palisade, a reference to the dense row of sharp teeth that this family often possesses.
