Kottelatia
The genus Kottelatia was first described in 2009 by ichthyologists Liao, Kullander, and Fang. The scientific name “Kottelatia” honors Maurice Kottelat, a prominent Swiss ichthyologist known for his work with freshwater fishes in Southeast Asia.
Number of species
The genus Kottelatia is monotypic, meaning it contains only one valid species: Kottelatia brittani.
Size of the Species
The only species within this genus, Kottelatia brittani, reaches a maximum length of about 5 centimeters.
Features
Kottelatia is distinguished from other genera within the family Danionidae by several anatomical features, such as a slender palatine with a narrow base and a long, non-protruding coronoid process. In addition, the anteroventral plate extension on the dentate is absent.
