Gasteropelecidae

The family of Hatchetfish or Gasteropelecidae contains 3 genera and only 9 species.

  • Carnegiella (4 species)
  • Gasteropelecus (3 species)
  • Thoracocharax (2 species)

They are found in Panama and South America. They usually swim at the surface, which is clearly reflected in the flattened top of the body.

Flying

The chest of the species within the Gasteropelecidae family is so large because it contains the chest muscles that allow them to lift themselves halfway above the water and glide over the water with strong blows of the pectoral fins. Some hatchetfish can do this so quickly that they lift themselves completely out of the water for short distances. Because the fish can jump out of the water so easily, an aquarium is required that has a tight-fitting lid. Even the smallest hole is often big enough to jump through!
