Lebiasinidae

The pensil fishes (Lebiasinidae) are a family within the order of the Characiformes. The family includes 7 genera and about 67 species.

The fish are found throughout South America, with the exception of Chile, Peru, Argentina and Uruguay, and are also found in Panama and Costa Rica. The fish grow to 1.6 to 16 centimeters in length and have relatively large scales.
