Loricariidae

The family Loricariidae is the largest family of catfish in existence. The family includes some 120 genera and currently 957 species. New species are still being discovered and many species are still awaiting description. The species within this family are also called Armored Catfish.

To keep the many new varieties apart, two German publishers have each devised their own system. Newly discovered, undescribed species were marked with an L-number or an LDA number.

Because the family is so extensive, the Loricariidae family has seven subfamilies:

Hypostominae
Hypoptopomatinae
Lithogeneinae
Loricariinae
Neoplecostominae
Otothyrinae (sometimes it is grouped under the Hypoptopomatinae)
