Leporacanthicus
The genus Leporacanthicus was described in 1989 for Isbrücker and Nijssen. The genus name can be broken into two parts. ‘Leporis’ means ‘hare’ or ‘rabbit’, a reference to the long, sturdy premaxillary teeth. ‘acanthicus’ is also a genus name and means ‘spiky’ and refers to the head of Acanthicus hystrix which has spiny odontes. Loosely translated, Leoparacanthiscus means hare-like like Acanthicus. The genus has four species:
Leporacanthicus galaxias, L029, Galaxy Pleco
Leporacanthicus heterodon
Leporacanthicus joselimai
Leporacanthicus triactis
