Nothobranchiidae

The Nothobranchiidae family includes 11 genera and a total of more than 260 species. All of these species are killifish. Many of these species are very colorful and usually do not grow larger than about 5 centimeters. All Nothobranchiidae species originate from Africa.

There are major differences in breeding these killifish. The Aphyosemion species can be bred in an aquarium with a lot of plants. Other species, such as the Nothobranchius, lay their eggs in peat. These eggs must first be kept slightly moist before they hatch, the so-called diapause.
