Gastromyzon aeroides was described in 2006 by Tan & Sulaiman. The genus name Gastromyzon can be broken down into two parts. From the ancient Greek comes “gaster” which means “belly” or “stomach”. The second part Myzo means to suckle. The species name aeroides comes from Latin and means “sky blue”, a reference to the blue in the back, anal and caudal fin.
