Ctenopoma was described in 1844 by Peters. This genus name can be broken into two parts. “Ctenos” means “comb” and “poma” means “operculum”. A reference to the serrated edge of the operculum of Ctenopoma multispine, the first described species within this genus.
It is a genus of freshwater fish belonging to the Anabantidae family. These fish are native to Africa and are commonly known as Climbing Gouramies due to their ability to climb out of the water. They are popular in the aquarium trade because of their unique appearance and behavior.
