Chromis

The genus name Chromis is derived from ancient Greek and means Fish or Perch. The genus was founded in 1814 by Cuvier.

In total, this genus comprises about 107 species. They are part of the large family Pomacentridae, which also includes the Clownfish. The family Pomacentridae is subdivided into subfamilies. Chromis falls into the subfamily Chrominae, along with the genera Acanthochromis, Altrichthys, Azurina, and Dascyllus.

Most Chromis species remain fairly small, are colorful and are resistant to water values that are not always ideal. These are often fish that are also suitable for the novice marine aquarist.
